RoboDance!
On 12 November 2008, there is a unique event coming up. Watch a professional DJ jamming with dancing robots together on stage!

The event is called RoboDance@iSHOP. It requires teams to submit a short video clip of their performance back in school, and ultimately get these clips displayed online and in iSHOP. The best ones will be invited to perform in public, in front of live audience and judges to clinch the grand award.

There is a whole Science and career path behind DJs in the music industry, way beyond the night scenes only. Participants will appreciate segments of music theory, how to match beats (bpm), ensuring octaves match, and of course learn to scratch discs and mix musical tracks.

Robots break dancing is already exciting enough, and further watching some students becoming DJs to add in music, plus throw in a few more break dancers, and you will have a great party, not just a competition.

Email to indicate your interest and get more information.

What is the Impact of robotics on education and career path choices?

This is a great extract from www.usfirst.org:  FIRST works closely with research and academic organizations to provide tangible evidence of our impact on students’ education and career choices.

Brandeis University Study

FIRST Robotics Competition

Recently, Brandeis University’s Center for Youth and Communities conducted an independent, retrospective survey of FIRST Robotics Competition participants and compared results to a group of non-FIRST students with similar backgrounds and academic experiences, including math and science. Highlights of the study’s findings include:

When compared with the comparison group, FIRST students are:

  • More than 3 times as likely to major specifically in engineering.
  • Roughly 10 times as likely to have had an apprenticeship, internship, or co-op job in their freshman year.
  • Significantly more likely to expect to achieve a post graduate degree.
  • More than twice as likely to expect to pursue a career in science and technology.
  • Nearly 4 times as likely to expect to pursue a career specifically in engineering.
  • More than twice as likely to volunteer in their communities.

Elpmis would like to declare our support for
code::XtremeApps::competition (http://www.itsc.org.sg/codeXtremeApps2008.html).  This heavily open source event encourages everyone to realise how powerful freedom can be.  Freedom from licenses, freedom to invent!  There is a new junior category for primary school students too!  Learn to program with Alice, a 3D-graphics-interactive-platform.  Programming is more like movie making in this case.  Become the elite few who controls the computer, and not just uses it.  Be a programmer!
